Vessel Wednesday
When I decided to join Vessel Wednesday the challenge for me was not really about taking a great picture (that's always hit or miss) but finding as many different ways as possible to interpret what a vessel really is. Genetics and breastfeeding two babies have pretty much made the bra a "never leave home without it" vessel in my life.
Just A Little Blown Away
Sorry for the long silence but major technical difficulties and the warm weather have kept me from writing and reading blogs. Unfortunately this post won't mean much to anyone who doesn't know me.
Once upon a time we used to own a restaurant and bar in a two very old and funky buildings. What I loved most was that the bar used to be an old jewelry shop and there was this huge walk in safe right in the middle of the bar (it was great for storing liquor).
The past year the new owners have spent a lot of time and money (I'm guessing close to a million dollars) renovating the building. We were invited to the VIP opening this past weekend. I admit I really didn't want to go but my husband came home after spending some time there the day before and told me I HAD to go.
I was completely blown away. The buildings had been totally gutted and are now absolutely gorgeous, with a beautiful patio and wavy salt water tank and stunning floors and a ceiling canopy thing that I was told cost more then my car. The people at this party were also young, gorgeous and stunning and very skinny and very well dressed and very metrosexual and everybody I knew at this party kept saying the same thing, "Do these people live in Albuquerque?".
We were treated very graciously by the new owners and chef and for someone like me who loves to people watch it was just the best entertainment ever. But it did hurt a little bit, it was just hard to see everything gone. Except for the bathroom stalls, I think the bathroom stalls just might be the same.

Skiing
I'm getting ready for our annual ski trip next week. We are leaving on Alexander's 7th birthday and so this year he asked for a ski cake. I have to admit he kind of stumped me with this request. We went to the specialty cake shop on Monday and I wasn't expecting to find much in the skiing/cake genre but I ended up getting these great little cake toppers.
Alex immediatey brought them home and started posing them for photographs. The other day he asked me if he could have his own blog. I'm still thinking about that one. Alex thought the fact that we could add a little snow in made them even better.
So now I have to figure out how to make a mountain, out of cake. I told Alex these skiers could be learning how to ski and we could make the cake flat and have it be the bottom of the bunny (beginning) slope and then lay all the newbie skiers on their back. He didn't really like that idea.
I did read about baking a cake in a bread pan and then cutting it on the diagonal to make it look like a mountain slope. This is the best idea I have found so far. If anyone out there has any suggestions please send them my way.

The Austen/Austin Siblings
I have been very faithfully watching the Jane Austen series on Masterpiece Theater. My favorite so far has been the biography, "Jane Austen Regrets". I have no idea if this is what she was really like but I wanted to be friends with that fictional Jane Austen.
Last Sunday, they showed Pride and Predjudice and I admit I have seen this version at least ten times. So the conversation with my husband went something like this:
Michael: Pride and Predjudice again! How much more Jane Austen is there?
Me: Oh, come on sit down and watch with me. You might actually like it. Didn't you ever have to read Jane Austen in high school or college or at least read the Cliffs Notes for a test?
Michael: Honey, before I met you if someone had asked me who Jane Austen was, I would have said that she was Steve Austin's sister.

Make My Day
Amy was nice enough to nominate for a Make My Day award and Bev in the sweetest way possible did not nominate me for an award. I decided not to choose knitting blogs because so many of my favorites have already been chosen by other bloggers. However with a Bloglines list that always seems to be growing, I definitely had all the material I needed for choosing ten non-knitting blogs that inspire me everyday.
Bake&Shake: If I had to put her blog in a category I guess it would be a cooking blog but I love her more for her sense of humor then her recipes.
Elsa Mora: She is so inspiring and creative. You must go and read this post, "How Art Saved Me" and don't forget to have the tissues handy because you will be crying at the end of it.
DesignSponge: So many beautiful things so little money to buy all of them. She also does a great podcast .
Katia & Kyliemac: My favorite podcast. Funny, cute, great guests and it all takes place in a Paris apartment plus they have a great new website.
Hyena in Petticoats: She describes herself as an "20 something, bad-mouthed bartender........with an Art History degree under her belt". I can remember a time when I was a 20 something bad-mouthed bartender (don't tell my mother) with a minor in Art History but I certainly never created something as wonderful as her Cathedral Window Quilt.
Lobstersquad: How can you not love a woman who creates an original piece of art with each post she writes and of course I think she designs the most beautiful banners.
Smitten Kitchen: She takes the most beautiful pictures of food. Looking at her blog makes you feel like you have just eaten a great meal.
My Half of the Brain: The place to go when your looking for that wonderful crafty tutorial you saw online, somewhere.
Assemblage: One day (in my dreams) I would love to be this sophisticated and this good of a seamstress.
Six One Way: Because they make everyday life look so magical.

Bread
.JPG)
One of my goals this year is to learn everything about baking bread. How to make beautiful loaves, and how to braid it and stuff it and make it flat and turn it into rolls and have it all taste delightfully good.
So every month I am going to try at least two different bread recipes. This is my first. They are called Oatmeal Knots and they have a lot in them for such a little roll. Honey, whole wheat flour, flax seed and of course oatmeal. I find them to be a little sweet but my kids loved them and they get a nice dose of omega-3's from the flax seed every time they eat one. The recipe is in this month's issue of Cooking Light magazine. Labels: baking
